Mike Fromandi is an MD–PhD student in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH), currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Data Science after recently completing three years of medical school.
His research focuses on developing clinically informed machine learning and optimization algorithms for neuroradiology and, more broadly, biomedical datasets. He is particularly interested in leveraging the shared biology present in datasets throughout the biomedical sciences (e.g., imaging, gene expression) to generate computationally efficient latent representations for data inference, augmentation, and other multimodal deep learning applications. His recent work explores contrastive learning and related approaches for advancing clinical utility in radiology.
Prior to pursuing MD-PhD training, Mike earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado Boulder. Now as a Ph.D. student, he works in the laboratories of JP Yu, MD, PhD, and Daniel Pimentel-Alarcón, PhD, who guide his work at the intersection of biomedical data science and clinical applications.
He was awarded the Radiology MD–PhD Graduate Student Fellowship from the UWSMPH Department of Radiology, and in 2025, he received a Computation and Informatics in Biology and Medicine (CIBM) Training Program Fellowship funded by the National Library of Medicine.
Originally from Colorado, Mike enjoys rock climbing, kayaking, woodworking, and running in his free time.
